Cambridge IGCSE First Language English is designed for learners whose first language is English. The course enables learners to develop the ability to communicate clearly, accurately and effectively when speaking and writing. Learners will be able to use a wide range of vocabulary, and the correct grammar, spelling and punctuation.

Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English offers learners the opportunity to read, interpret, evaluate and respond to a range of literature in English. The range includes drama, prose and poetry from the works of Shakespeare to contemporary literature. This course enables learners to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the ways in which writers use English to express meaning and achieve effects. Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English will stimulate learners to read for pleasure and to explore wider and universal issues, promoting a better understanding
of themselves and the world.

The language A: literature course introduces students to the analysis of literary texts. It is the course through which the IB’s policy of mother-tongue entitlement is delivered. The course is automatically available in 55 languages and available by special request and may be studied in any language with a sufficiently developed written literature.

The language A: language and literature course introduces the critical study and interpretation of written and spoken texts from a wide range of literary forms and non literary text-types. The formal analysis of texts is supplemented by awareness that meaning is not fixed but can change in respect to contexts of production and consumption. This course is available for study in 17 languages.

The literature and performance course aims to explore the relationship between literature and theatre. The main focus of the course is the interaction between the literary skills of close reading, critical writing and discussion and the practical, aesthetic and symbolic elements of performance.

This course is designed for students who speak another language or dialect as their first or ‘home’ language. EAL/D focuses on the development of the competent use of Standard Australian English (SAE) in a range of contexts. Academic English skills are developed to prepare students for tertiary study.
